South Sudan Landmine Crisis Amid Mass Returns
While hundreds of thousands of displaced South Sudanese continue to pour back into the country, the sheer volume of landmines remains a significant concern despite an estimated 84 million square meters already cleared.
The most affected state, Eastern Equatoria, has almost half of the known landmine clusters but has also seen the second-highest number of refugees head back, many forced by slashed food rations at refugee camps in neighboring Uganda.
With farming the only source of food, but land often blocked off or at risk of containing unexploded mines, many either starve or risk their lives trying to cultivate the land.
