My personal hallmark for something horrible that I experienced in person was in Forest City, North Carolina when I was a child, noticing public drinking fountains and toilets marked "Coloured" and "White". That would have been around 1956 or so.
So if something like that, that long ago, is one's benchmark for "progress", then it is sad.
