ATLA is a very liberal show, the plot is yet another liberal fantasy of WW2, it’s very brown, even for its time it was extremely feminist, and the whole moral conflict of the final arc is a thinly veiled metaphor for the death penalty debate which was raging at the time (naturally they endorse the Democrat anti death penalty position). the reason that it’s good is simply when it was made, liberal writers in America back then were still interested in creating fun worlds, stories, and characters, they were at least as interested in Asian cultures and martial arts as they were the hot issues of the Democratic Party. Oh and faggots weren’t required to be in every kids show, that’s the other big difference.

that era is just gone, full stop. It was really at the very tale end of it too because even korra, which feels like a lifetime ago at this point, had already moved on from ATLA’s feminism of “look, the girls are just as tough and strong as the boys!” To “actually girls are tougher and stronger and better in every way” and liberals have gotten DRAMATICALLY more bitter and vindictive in the decade since korra. It’s a lot like Star Trek, the lighthearted fun days are never coming back, it’s all resentment from here on.
