very similar happening in Germany. The tragedy is, it felt like mainstream politicians seemed to have understood that around 2016. Not just Merkel, but including the more conservative populist leader of the Bavarian Conservatives. But then Merz took over the leadership of the Conservatives with the promise to half the AfD vote share and has since doubled it instead by moving the whole discussion to the right. 😢
