Breaking news. After 27 years at The New York Times, this is my last day on the payroll. Everyone leaves the newsroom sooner or later. No exceptions. The only question is whether you get to choose when and how. I'm choosing to leave at the top of my game. It's not exactly a retirement, but it is definitely a big step back. I plan to do some writing and traveling, and I might edit on the side
