It is 5:59 am and I can see the tour guide debating whether we are waiting any longer for the final four people (there are only 9 of us) to show up before we leave for the Chichén Itzá tour.
They told us all to be here by 5:50 and it was said all over the confirmation that they would not wait. The point is to get to Chichén Itzá right before/when the gates open “para evitar los multitudes y el calor.” (To avoid crowds and heat but it sounds better in Spanish)
I got to chat a little with the driver who complimented my Spanish and told me how very happy it made him that I thought Merida is a beautiful and very safe city. He asked what San Francisco is like (I always say I live in San Francisco to make things easier) and I said also very very beautiful but you can’t leave things in your car the way you can here and he was a little shocked. So we talked a little about wealth inequality and housing scarcity. I’m proud that I could do this conversation in Spanish at 6 am.
