For your information, this is what I shared (in French) on my Facebook page, for better or for worse :
Hello,
I wanted to inform you that I have recently turned to the Nostr platform (https://nostr.how/fr/get-started) after losing trust in X.com. I had already left Facebook since the ban on news sites [in Canada, for valid reasons].
Nostr is built on a key principle: the absence of censorship. This protocol allows users to control their identity, their posts, and their audience through cryptographic keys that belong to them, without relying on a central authority. Numerous “relays” (independent servers) ensure freedom of expression and act as a safeguard against potential censorship attempts.
Curious to better understand the political dynamics on Nostr, I observed some trends. My analysis is based on a limited sample, so it may not be entirely accurate.
Most users seem to align with a libertarian movement, often associated with the right. There is a strong presence of the “America First” movement, which advocates for economic protectionism, immigration restrictions, and strong nationalism, as well as moderate conservatives. On the fringes, a few white supremacists are also present, though they remain a minority.
Nostr is sometimes described as a “right-wing Bitcoin spam site filled with bad memes,” while others argue that it is “not right-wing enough.” A significant portion of the content reflects an American conservative perspective, often linked to the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement, which shares similarities with “America First” but with a populist dimension and a strong attachment to Donald Trump. The most discussed topics on the platform are Bitcoin, technology, and self-sufficiency (homesteading).
The community is generally welcoming and willing to help newcomers get familiar with the platform. However, the political uniformity can sometimes be a barrier for those seeking more diversity.
Regardless, I want to experiment with the Nostr protocol to see if it truly allows all perspectives to be heard. For example, I cut off a news feed that was 100% MAGA, but I tolerate another one that, while also MAGA, often reports factual information. Nostr is new to me, and the protocol promises that, even among predominantly right-wing (or left-wing) users, an opposing voice can still have a place. I want to see that for myself.
