On Friday, my daughter, “E,” spent the night with my parents (her grandparents) along with a couple of her cousins. In the middle of the night, “E” woke up, and my mom pulled her into bed to comfort her. As they lay there, my mom began telling her made-up stories about an adventurer named “E,” weaving tales of heroism, bravery, and adventure.
Unbeknownst to my mom, one of the cousins, “A,” had woken up too and was standing at the foot of the bed quietly listening. After a while, “A” excitedly announced, “Okay, I’m going to crawl in. And now I want you to tell stories with ‘E’ and ‘A’ in them!” My mom, always quick to embrace a moment, adjusted the story to include both “E” and “A,” creating adventures that brought them together in these imagined feats.
As my mom recounted this story, I couldn’t help but reflect on the deeper meaning. When others hear an inspiring story — one filled with heroism, righteousness, and hope — they don’t just want to listen. They long to be a part of it. It’s as though something deep within us stirs when we see a life lived with courage and purpose. We can only stand at the sidelines for so long before our hearts cry out, “Put me in that story!”
For those of us who deeply love friends, family, or others who aren’t yet part of the story we find ourselves in — the story of Hope — take heart. People long for hope, for purpose, for the kind of life that truly matters. Given enough time, they will encounter the decision to step into that story. And if they do, we can welcome them with open arms, inviting them to live lives of courage, sacrifice, and love alongside us.
