FYI you don't just throw them down any old place...
Sometimes the best thing to do is use them to direct water away from the thing you are trying to protect.
Remember building with Lego? If you build a wall with all the bricks stacked in columns it is not sturdy, you have to offset the bags.
Only fill the bags about half way.
This will allow for the sand in the bags to settle and snuggle up with the other bags creating a more effective barrier. Too full will cause pockets where water can infiltrate your wall.
