Astrobiologists have proposed that extreme forms of life could survive in the harsh conditions of Venus' atmosphere. Despite high concentrations of sulfuric acid, most of the amino acids used by Earth life can handle the extreme acidity. Now, researchers have taken the experiments farther, showing that lipid membranes can remain stable in sulfuric acid as well. These would protect and enclose life, allowing it to elongate and go through cell division.
