I think a compassionate left is about seeing society as a collective endeavour for everyone's benefit.... you are right getting there often involves a conflict between those who benefit from the old order, but the end-point is a society that works for all... now one might argue that the process of getting there is conflictual, but then any social change involves a conflict with the beneficiaries of the prior social system/settlment
