I have to say that I understand the appeal of gravel biking, especially in places that are not very bicycle friendly. There is a downside, however.
When my kids were younger we used a local rail trail (a railroad grade converted to a trail, for those who don't know) which was basically gravel. No motor traffic was a huge draw. However, I always felt lousy doing it, in a way. Had to pack up the bikes in and on the van and drive across town. Seemed kind of silly to spend so much car time to ride our bikes.
I guess any off road would have that disadvantage.
