Many years ago my family learned about the teflon in the kitchen the hard way. We didn’t know we had a teflon mat in the oven, which was left there by a well-meaning in-law as a house warming gift. One day my wife was cooking and all the birds in our house (4 zebra finches) keeled over dead within minutes.
