In the recent kerfuffle, one refrain I've heard repeated a few times is that PSF Fellow status should not be such a big deal. I want to push back — gently — on this idea, because in fact status and recognition of status is a form of collective action, and this is an *important* function the PSF performs. My dad gave a talk on this over a decade ago, about how software people undervalue this sort of work, and about how he got to meet Bruce Momjian, among others
