I wait.
I think of something I'd like to hear or read about. I might ask a question and then I wait to see what my brain creates. I'll write down whatever I can grab and then I'll wait again while more characters, more dialogue, and better ideas begin to form.
You'll know when I fished out something good when I spontaneously start yelling at the top of my lungs, usually in rush hour traffic.
