Multiple massive corporations like Google and Amazon have been found to be covertly funding anti-abortion legislation, while publicly offering to cover travel costs for employees seeking abortions in states where it's illegal.
There's a lot of criticism accusing them of "playing both sides", but that makes no sense - the US government is controlled by corporations, not the other way around. Google and Amazon are pretty damn good at not doing anything they don't want to regardless of what the law says.
What's really happening is deliberate effort to make the government appear unreliable, backwards, and oppressive while these corporations get to look like the progressive givers of liberty and freedom. This is the end result of billions upon billions of dollars dumped into Libertarian thinktanks since the 1920s.
We're going to end up in a surveillance state like China, but privatized rather than government-run. We're already in the process. Our phones and every app on them gather a litany of data that gets sold and used against you personally (example: your gps data gets sold to your car insurance company, who uses it to see if you have a habit of speeding or other kinds of reckless driving, and raises your rates accordingly.)
The American public wildly underestimates the power corporations like these have, how much they control our government, and their ability to socially engineer.
I think the plummeting birth rates are a red herring (even in those cold-blooded economic analysis discussions that refer to potential mothers as 'baby ranchers', restricting abortion access isn't predicted to increase birth rates by much). There's a bigger agenda if these companies are spending billions to enact a law that they turn around and undermine with their own company policy, which they're also paying for.
