It's also really hard to deliver on great user experience without more central direction or control and more control from non-software-engineers than many open source contributors are comfortable with.
It's hard to do a whole platform well without the kind of resources Apple/Google/Microsoft/etc have and equally hard to do a platform at any of those shops that is entirely user-aligned.
