There is an odd species of retail customer that just automatically puts their phone number into the card reader at the checkout. They seem to think it just gives you a discount just for doing that.
They get really mad when you won't let them put their phone number in. They don't have an account, they set nothing up, they didn't set up coupons and there are no points - but they are MAD that they didn't get to put in their phone number.
It doesn't do anything at all. Especially if you didn't set anything up! All they're doing is putting their info into the marketing system over and over again. They're probably getting an obscene amount of junk mail, as they go through life, putting their phone number into any interface that asks for it. They don't even read what it's saying, they just start typing.
