It's interesting that you mention that in this context. The total amount of gold confiscated was just above 85 million ounces, or $1.7b in USD. Within 10 years, FDR effectively gave almost 10x the value of Americans' gold to Stalin to fund his war against the Germans. In effect, the gold was monetized and given to the worst possible people in the world.
