I would say it increases security more than privacy. It's hard to walk that balance, as they can often be competing ideas.
Utmost privacy means trusting myself to host and review every open source product I use. Which is a hard pill to swallow.
The most secure environments are often the least private. Your information might not be publicly available, but someone else owns it.
That was the whole debate between Calyx and Graphene, if I recall. Calyx prioritized privacy over security. Graphene security over privacy. IOS lockdown is probably more secure, but Apple still knows everything.
