TCP/IP is like the neck of an hourglass. The wide top represents diverse underlying transmission technologies (copper, radio, fiber, pigeons). The wide bottom symbolizes all the purposes TCP/IP serves, like web browsing, email, streaming, and whatnot. The neck is where it all converges: the IP address and a TCP port. Regardless of the underlying tech or the use case, data must pass through this narrow point.
Also, it's been there since early 80s, so by Lindy effect, it's gonna stick.
