There's a bunch of different parading groups around here: Catholic, protestant, secular, black, White. One of the oldest ones that are still parading today, the Comic Cowboys of Wragg Swamp, was originally started by Jonny's favorite people back in 1884.
In the New Orleans area they are typically known as Crews or Krewes, and in the Mobile, AL area they are often referred to as Mystic Societies or Mysticks.
Waaaay back when I was in high school, we had to skip school to go to the parades. Now a days the public schools are all closed for Lundi Gras (Monday), Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday), and Ash Wednesday.
