A prison had an LED electronic display system and needed a special transmission box to send data via serial cable to each. 4 hours on the phone and couldn't determine the problem. There was a mass of cables under a desk where the box lived. I pulled the mains cable and saw a plug move. Plugged it in and it all worked. They thought it was plugged in but couldn't be bothered checking.
