I did go through a minor phase of reading graphic novels (mostly Gaiman). I know it's not for everyone's taste. I don't read them now.
They found a roman villa with a mosaic depicting scenes from the battle of Troy. They likened it to a comic book showing the key scenes in the event. So maybe the comic book style is much older than we think?
