It's interesting to see how Fourier came up with his trigonometric series while studying heat. He starts his paper by noting that the surface of the Earth is heated by the Sun in a periodic way. And then he observes that the diurnal variations disappear at the depth of 3m, and seasonal variations are undetectable at 60m.
