They usually need some back-ups during the school year, but the major recruiting push is in August and the time requirement is a couple of hours 4x (I think) a year. You get matched with a middle school kid in a low income school and exchange letters with them so they can "meet" a scientist, which makes it more real for them that it's a career they can have.
