I think the literally true aspect points to a deeper issue. If it is indeed the Word of God, and not nearly a collection of deep thoughts about the nature of God written by men, then that has deep implications on what in it is to believed and followed. If it's just a collection of deep thoughts, then it ought not have any more bearing on my life than any other book of deep thoughts, and I'm free to pick and choose the parts of it that help me live a 'good' life. The Christian would argue that you're not free to pick and choose those parts, it is divine revelation that you are to order your life around.
