Probably dependent on how efficient/fast the fridge is at extracting heat vs. how hot the pan is. Slightly warm, like after a couple hours outside, is probably fine. But a really hot pan probably takes quite a while, in the meantime everything nearby warms up.
And, because most fridges only have cooling coils in the freezer, with a vent to shuffle cold air between it and fridge if needed, heat in the fridge has to travel into the freezer before it will get extracted, warming frozen items along the way.
I wonder if wrapping the hot pan in towels to slow the heat loss would help?
