I think before the late 1980s it was understood that businesses had a responsibility to shareholders, workers and the community. Then came the GE style capitalism that said the only responsibility is to maximize shareholder value in the short term. Squeezing the last bit from the company with no long term vision.... We now live through the results of that. I lived through that transition at 3M... Started mif 90s, and then 2001 former GE managers took over.
