The samplerate (22.05kHz) and whether it's mono/stereo (mono) is important, too. You can also achieve much better-sounding audio by using some very severe EQ settings - essentially cutting all audio above a particular high frequency, which doesn't make much difference to most people but makes it much easier for the encoders. I did a similar trick for a DAB radio station in about 2005, and it makes a massive difference.
