During the viking era, kings were hard pressed to find a solution to raids and profitable attacks on their estate.
Eventually they paid the vikings by giving them water-bordering lands to control and defend in order to stop the attacks. That decision was the seed of the end of many of their dynasties. But during their lifetimes, they enjoyed peace.
