Life feeds on life. This is where the concept of original sin comes from. How can we reconcile ourselves with being just, loving, and moral creatures, when we are forced to kill in order to survive. Vegans and vegetarians think they have escaped the circle of life, but just because a plant doesn't scream when you cut it doesn't mean there isn't some form of consciousness finding pain in death. Thus, we invented prayer before meals, to give thanks to the deaths that sustain us. It's not about thanking god, but about accepting our role as kindred animals in suffering.
