In the completely shambolic mess that is the Equality Act in the UK, yes, there are such exceptions.
I think it's slightly unclear as to what would happen with a Giggle vs. Tickle case in the UK however, because the Equality Act isn't internally consistent with itself, and certainly isn't consistent with the GRA (hence the "repeal the GRA" campaign.)
Beira's place would come under the examples given (rape crisis counselling is I think one of the explicitly mentioned examples) where sex can trump gender reassignment.
An app like Giggle would be different I suspect as it's got to be proportionate, and the Tickles of this world would argue that there's no urgently pressing need for women to have a woman only social media app. I don't know how a judge would find on that one.
As I understand it, Aus has cocked up by doing a global search-and-replace of "sex" with "gender" in some of its legislation, plus further cocking up by allowing the "sex is a spectrum" flat-earthers to establish case law pushing "facial features" as more important than whether you have or have had a dick and balls.
As always, though, IANAL.
Wonder how the appeals will go.
