so i discovered that my previous installation on my VPS had swap on it and it was required for being able to use the import function... with GOGC=10 and MEMLIMIT=1000000 it was able to swallow the whole lot just fine, obvisouly i might need to refine how the import function works so it doesn't blow out the heap
