25 years ago, I became interested in trans rights when my pet car had to go to the vet because it developed a urinary tract infection. While there, I learned that though I thought I had a female cat, in actuality it was a male with a vagina.
Sadly, the cat had to be euthanized because it couldn’t recover from the infection.
I was dumbfounded because I thought everything in nature was clearly male or female—that if something was male, it would have a penis. Yet my cat proved to me otherwise.
Curious, I wondered if something similar happened with humans. And I was shocked to discover that not only does this happen with humans, it’s also very common.
A few years after my cat died, a friend give birth to a baby with Klinefelter Syndrome—which means it had XXY chromosomes. Assigned male at birth, this child later transitioned to become a woman.
This is something I always bring up when someone says trans people aren’t “real”.
