the claim of democratic capitalist states to such glorious concepts as liberty, equality, and fraternity is constantly belied by the violence they have to perpetrate in order to exist.
whether official state execution, deadly police violence, carpet bombing of entire countries, forced labor, extensive pollution and ecological disruption, medical violence, educational violence, carceral violence, or the social murder of poverty and starvation itself, the state never stops coming up with new ways to brutalize and liquidate the working class on behalf of capital.
the military, legal, and political control imposed by the state is both needed by and needs the material and economic control imposed by capitalists. this is why the nationalization of industrial capital is not socialistic, but a further development of capitalism called state capitalism. but dont confuse this with me saying that a liberal free-market system doesnt depend on the state, and in fact it depends on the state no less than any state capitalism.
