Like when a child is having a temper tantrum, if giving the kid candy will make them happy then a bad mother will do it. She doesn't understand she's just incentivizing the child to act out worse and more often.
They only understand "Doing this makes people happy" and follow through with that. This includes things they have been told will make them happy, even if it makes them miserable
