I saw some huge thread on the birdsite where people don't understand what "male gaze" means, and a sub-thread about people fighting over what it means. I think it's ironic that scholars who are so intent on categorizing society and its reactions to things, are also really bad at thinking about how people will interpret jargon when it inevitably leaks into the public sphere. ("cultural appropriation" also an example of this)
