FWIW, in Touhou project, Zun wrote the story of Sanae, Kanako and Suwako to be about two goddesses who were no longer being worshipped going to 幻想郷 to regain their power through having believers. This was definitely a reflection of modern japanese society as no Japanese really believes in their cultural gods and goddesses anymore.
If you look at most polytheistic faiths, the gods and goddesses are being ignored by their own volk ALL the time. It doesnt matter if you are aryan, you can either pray to, or show some form of respect to say Shintou gods, or as a Japanese show respect to Odin, or Zeus.
