During the fascist coup in Spain in 1936, it was not Azaña who frustrated Franco's advance, but rather the affinity groups and popular militias who defended their communities. These groups were provisioned by those communities and their aid networks. Azaña never picked up a rifle nor baked a loaf of bread, and no amount of paper rectangles in a box would have changed that fact.
