My biggest issue with the Burkean conservative argument, that change should be resisted because institutions emerge for functional reasons and stability should be its own objective, is the impossibility of identifying and inferring causality.
How do we know this norm serves this functional purpose? How do we know we owe to it stability and a lessening of our cognitive burdens? It seems like any conceivable way of answering these questions involves politics, which necessarily invokes change.
