I haven't bound books from A4 sheets but my father has, with pages in the hundreds. My memory is hazy since he did it a few years ago but he stitched the pages first tightly then used a specific glue (IDK the English name) to ultimately make sure everything stays in place. In the end, the finished product was like a hardcover book (the glue really helped in this process).
