“Study hard what interests you the most in the most undisciplined, irreverent and original manner possible.”

100%. I never went to University, and as my first boss used to say, I'd rather hire someone with four years of solid real-world work experience, that someone who spent four years filling their head with other people's ideas. Failing which, I'd rather hire someone whom I can give four years real-world working experience TO, teaching them the way our company does things and making them into productive, happy, loyal employees, than wait for them to finish a four-year course where they'll learn things which potentially won't be any value to me anyway. (He hired *me* straight out of Matric, and although I haven't worked for him for many many years, I've never looked back).
Tertiary #Education is (often) overrated. If you don't get in, or you can't afford to get in, or you're just not particularly inclined to try to get in and you think that means there's something wrong with you because all your peers are going to university, don't beat yourself up.
