Sadly, I think you’re exactly right. Pretending money and self promotion doesn’t drive journalism (and the world) is a delusion of idealists; often the younger ones. There is no reason the fediverse has to be averse to advertising, if it decides where and how it’s best applied, and ensure that it doesn’t dictate content. To this day, I never meet anyone saying “I hate XYZ b/c of ads.” They mostly hate the algos pushing them.
