Should a writer have their picture in their book jacket?
I don't think anyone "should" do anything. Should statements are a one-way ticket to disappointment, but that's another topic for another day.
Each individual has the ability to choose the jacket/layout that works best for them. Enforcing a "standard" means gatekeeping publishing from people who don't want to/can't conform. I don't really care what an author looks like, only that their story is written in a way I find captivating.
Also, doesn't that mean anyone writing under a pen name/pseudonym would be exposed? What if someone is trying to hide from an abuser but still tell their story? Why does a writer have to want to expose themselves when we live in an era of doxxing and online harassment that turns physical?
No. I don't think an author "should" include one. It's about safety.
