It felt like everything served the mood and if you thought too hard about *why* someone would do that, it stopped making sense.
The ending annoyed me because it casually invoked an aspect of the in-setting universe that had never been mentioned before. As if an editor who'd only ever experienced SF on TV unilaterally rewrote it.
