Speaking of books that may change your perspective, Grant by Ron Chernow is pretty up there. The narrative that Grant was a mediocre/bad President is entirely predicated on valuing African Americans less than other Americans. If you value all Americans equally, Grant was one of the greatest Presidents ever. In the late 1860s he tried to pass civil rights legislation enshrining principles it would take the US 100 years to finally adopt (after the Civil Rights movement). He sent federal troops into the South to protect African American lives and voting rights. He took an incredible amount of heat for that but did it anyway because it was the right thing to do. Criminally underrated President and great book.
