That turned out to be pretty straightforward. With yesterday's update the inittab was set back to level 3 (the default Slackware level). Simply copying the automatically made backup inittab.org back to inittab restored runlevel 4. Which you need to start a displaymanager like GDM or SDDM upon boot. Reading this back I do sound as the idiot I am.
