Traditional histograms, timelines use one axis for time and often use a second axis for geographic regions... but is geographic extension the best thing to depict? Population, technology, culture, religion, urbanisation, wealth... many other social or economic metrics could be represented.
Military history would focus on major wars and historically relevant battles...
Tech history would focus on inventions and their spread.
History of religion would similarly focus on prophets and conversions.
Economic history on trade routes, economic growth and industrialisation.
All of them would have many blank spaces where data is scarce, especially in ancient history.
