I have a friend who will actually go out and pet free-roaming cattle on a hike. But then she's an actual veterinarian.

That reminds me of a hike we did together, where we ended up in an area with some free-roaming goats. A couple of them basically climbed in our lap when we sat down for lunch, insisting they get scritches.
The area also had some cows, but luckily they were not interested in pets and happily stayed further off.
